What Should We Wear for Our Yosemite Wedding?
Another question I’m asked often is, “What should we wear for our Yosemite wedding?” The wonderful answer is… almost anything.
One of the things I love most about Yosemite weddings is that there are no expectations. Your wedding attire should reflect your personality, your ceremony location, and the adventure you’re planning—not someone else’s idea of what a wedding should look like. Whether you’re envisioning a formal black-tie celebration, a flowing wedding dress paired with hiking boots, or comfortable outdoor clothing for a mountaintop ceremony, the most important thing is that you feel confident, comfortable, and completely yourselves.
Consider Your Ceremony Location
The location you choose should play a significant role in deciding what to wear. If your ceremony is taking place at an easily accessible location like Sentinel Beach or Cook’s Meadow, wearing traditional wedding attire is usually very practical. On the other hand, if you’re hiking to Taft Point, Sentinel Dome, or another more adventurous location, you’ll want to choose clothing and footwear that safely accommodates the hike. Many couples even hike in comfortable clothing before changing into their wedding attire near the ceremony location. There’s no right or wrong approach—only what works best for your adventure.
Dress for the Season
Yosemite experiences four distinct seasons, and temperatures can vary dramatically depending on the time of year and your elevation. Spring mornings may begin chilly before warming into beautiful afternoons. Summer offers warm days and comfortably cool evenings, though higher elevations often remain significantly cooler than Yosemite Valley. Autumn brings crisp mountain air and changing colors, making layers a great option. Winter weddings may require warm coats, gloves, boots, and a willingness to embrace whatever Mother Nature has planned. Checking the weather forecast is always important, but mountain weather can change quickly, so it’s wise to bring an extra layer even on sunny days.
Comfort Is More Important Than Perfection
Your wedding day will likely include walking, standing, climbing over rocks, exploring scenic viewpoints, and spending time outdoors. While everyone wants to look their best, you’ll enjoy your wedding much more if your clothing allows you to move comfortably and confidently. Remember, your smile will always photograph better than uncomfortable shoes.

Even if you plan to wear dress shoes or elegant heels during your ceremony, consider bringing comfortable hiking shoes or boots for walking to and from your location. Many couples change shoes just before the ceremony or even wear hiking boots beneath their wedding attire. It has become something of a Yosemite tradition—and honestly, it often makes for some pretty fun photographs.
Think About the Wind
One thing many couples don’t anticipate is Yosemite’s occasional afternoon breeze. Long veils can create absolutely breathtaking photographs as they flow in the mountain air, but they can also become difficult to manage if the wind picks up unexpectedly. Others prefer hiking pants, flannel shirts, climbing gear, or outdoor apparel that reflects their love of adventure. I’ve officiated beautiful ceremonies featuring both, and neither is more “correct” than the other. The best wedding attire is the attire that feels authentically you.
My Personal Recommendation
After officiating weddings throughout Yosemite for many years, I’ve found that the happiest couples usually prioritize comfort without sacrificing style. Wear something that makes you feel confident. Choose footwear that’s appropriate for your ceremony location. Dress for the weather rather than the forecast. And most importantly, don’t worry about getting a little dust on your shoes or pine needles on your dress. You’re getting married in one of the most beautiful national parks in the world—not inside a ballroom. Those little reminders that you celebrated your wedding surrounded by nature often become some of your favorite memories. At the end of the day, your guests won’t remember what brand of shoes you wore or whether your dress collected a little trail dust.
