For many couples, their dog isn’t just a pet—it’s family. So it’s only natural to wonder whether your four-legged companion can be part of your Yosemite wedding. The answer is yes… in many situations.

With a little planning and an understanding of Yosemite’s pet regulations, your dog can often share in one of the happiest days of your life while helping ensure the park remains safe and enjoyable for everyone.

Know Yosemite’s Pet Regulations

Yosemite National Park welcomes leashed pets in many developed areas, including paved roads, sidewalks, campgrounds, picnic areas, and several designated locations. However, pets are not allowed on most hiking trails, in designated wilderness areas, inside public buildings, or in many of Yosemite’s iconic natural areas.

Because regulations occasionally change, it’s always a good idea to review the National Park Service’s current pet guidelines while planning your wedding. Understanding these rules ahead of time will help you choose a ceremony location that’s both beautiful and appropriate for including your dog.

Choose a Dog-Friendly Ceremony Location

If having your dog present is one of your highest priorities, it’s worth considering that before selecting your ceremony location. Some designated wedding sites are much better suited for pets than others. By choosing a location where dogs are permitted, you can enjoy the day without worrying about unexpected restrictions.

Bring a Trusted Dog Handler

One of the best decisions you can make is asking a trusted family member or friend to be your dog’s dedicated companion throughout the day. That person can hold the leash during the ceremony, provide water, take your dog for walks, and care for them while you’re taking photographs in areas where pets may not be permitted. It allows you to stay fully present while ensuring your dog is happy, comfortable, and well cared for.

Include Your Dog in Meaningful Ways

Your dog doesn’t have to be involved in every moment to play an important role. Some couples choose to have their dog walk with them before the ceremony, appear in a few family photographs, wear a decorative bandana or floral collar, or simply be present as they exchange vows. It’s also a thoughtful way to ensure other visitors can continue enjoying the park peacefully. Respecting Yosemite’s regulations helps preserve this remarkable place for future generations.

Consider Your Dog’s Comfort

Wedding days can be exciting, but they can also be long. Warm temperatures, busy parking areas, unfamiliar surroundings, and crowds may be stressful for some dogs. Pay attention to your pet’s needs throughout the day. Sometimes the kindest decision is allowing them to join for part of the celebration before relaxing somewhere quiet with their handler. A happy, comfortable dog makes for a much happier wedding day.

My Personal Recommendation

Some of my favorite Yosemite weddings have included a happy dog wagging its tail beside the couple. They don’t care whether the flowers match. They aren’t worried about the timeline. They’re simply excited to be with their favorite people. There’s something wonderfully genuine about that.

If your dog has been part of your journey together, including them in your wedding can make the day even more meaningful. Just remember that, like every member of your wedding party, they’ll have the best experience when the day is planned with their comfort and well-being in mind. After all, the goal isn’t simply to have your dog attend your wedding. It’s to create wonderful memories together while respecting the incredible park you’re all fortunate enough to share.

Dogs (leashed or not) are not allowed on trails, within the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, in non-developed areas (including beaches and dirt surfaces) and Wilderness areas, on the O’Shaughnessy Dam, within Camp 4 and backpackers campgrounds, or in specific areas as posted by signs.
