But after officiating weddings throughout Yosemite for many years, I’ve learned that it’s often the little details—not the big ones—that make the biggest difference. The suggestions below are simply a collection of practical tips I’ve shared with countless couples over the years. Hopefully they’ll help make your Yosemite wedding as enjoyable, relaxed, and memorable as possible.
Expect Nature to Be… Nature

But after officiating weddings throughout Yosemite for many years, I’ve learned that it’s often the little details—not the big ones—that make the biggest difference. The suggestions below are simply a collection of practical tips I’ve shared with countless couples over the years. Hopefully they’ll help make your Yosemite wedding as enjoyable, relaxed, and memorable as possible.
Cell Service Can Be Limited
Depending on where your ceremony takes place, cell phone service may be unreliable or unavailable. Download maps before arriving, share meeting locations with your guests in advance, and don’t rely entirely on GPS once you’re inside the park. Having a printed itinerary can also be surprisingly helpful.
Allow More Travel Time Than You Think You’ll Need
Driving through Yosemite isn’t like driving through a city. You’ll likely stop to admire the scenery, wildlife may slow traffic, and parking areas can fill unexpectedly during busy seasons. Give yourself a little extra time. Arriving early is almost always more enjoyable than arriving rushed.
Stay Hydrated and Keep Your Energy Up
Yosemite’s elevation, sunshine, and dry mountain air can be surprisingly dehydrating, especially during spring, summer, and early autumn. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day so you feel your best.
It’s just as important to eat. Between getting ready, traveling to your ceremony location, and taking photographs afterward, it’s easy to forget to stop for a meal. I always recommend eating a good breakfast or lunch before your ceremony and packing a few light snacks to bring along. You may be exploring Yosemite with your photographer for several hours after your ceremony, and a quick snack can make all the difference in keeping your energy up and allowing you to fully enjoy the experience. Trust me—your wedding day is much more enjoyable when you’re celebrating your marriage instead of thinking about your next meal!
Leave No Trace
One of the greatest gifts we can give future visitors is helping preserve Yosemite’s incredible beauty. Please pack out everything you bring into the park, remain on established trails whenever possible, and follow National Park regulations regarding decorations, flowers, amplified music, and other ceremony items. Together, we can help ensure Yosemite remains just as beautiful for generations to come.
Have a Backup Plan
Weather in the Sierra Nevada can change quickly. Although most wedding days are beautiful, it’s always wise to think about what you’ll do if rain, smoke, road closures, or unexpected weather affects your plans. Having a backup location—or simply a flexible attitude—can eliminate a great deal of unnecessary stress.
Consider Your Guests
If family and friends will be attending your ceremony, think about their experience as well. Will grandparents need a shorter walk? Will young children need snacks or breaks? Is there adequate shade during a summer afternoon ceremony? A little thoughtfulness goes a long way toward helping everyone enjoy your special day.
Slow Down
This may be the most important advice I can offer. Wedding days have a way of moving much faster than we expect. Take a moment to look around. Notice the granite cliffs. Listen to the river. Feel the breeze through the pine trees. Hold hands for just a little longer after your ceremony. Those quiet moments often become the memories you’ll treasure most.
My Personal Recommendation
I’ve officiated weddings during snowstorms, beneath brilliant blue skies, beside roaring waterfalls, and under some of the most spectacular sunsets imaginable. No matter the season, the weather, or the location, the happiest couples all seem to have one thing in common. They don’t spend the day worrying about every little detail. They focus on each other. If something doesn’t go exactly as planned, smile and keep going. The mountains have been here for millions of years, and they’ll happily provide a beautiful backdrop no matter what unfolds. At the end of the day, your guests won’t remember whether every strand of hair stayed perfectly in place or whether your timeline ran five minutes behind. They’ll remember watching two people deeply in love begin the next chapter of their lives in one of the most beautiful places on Earth. And that’s what truly matters.
