Where Should We Stay For Our Yosemite Wedding?
Choosing where to stay is one of the most important decisions you’ll make while planning your Yosemite wedding. Your accommodations will influence everything from your morning timeline and travel logistics to how relaxed and enjoyable your entire experience feels.
Whether you’re planning an intimate elopement for two or celebrating with family and friends, Yosemite offers a wide variety of lodging options both inside the park and in the surrounding gateway communities. The best choice depends on your ceremony location, budget, guest count, and the type of experience you’re hoping to create.
One piece of advice I share with every couple is this: book your lodging as early as possible. Accommodations in and around Yosemite can fill months in advance, especially during spring, summer, holidays, and weekends.
Staying Inside Yosemite National Park
There’s something truly special about waking up inside Yosemite National Park. Rather than spending your wedding morning driving through park entrances or searching for parking, you’ll already be surrounded by Yosemite’s incredible scenery. Staying inside the park also makes it easier to enjoy sunrise or sunset photography, spend more time exploring after your ceremony, and simply relax without feeling rushed.

Staying Outside Yosemite National Park
If lodging inside the park isn’t available—or simply doesn’t fit your budget—the gateway communities surrounding Yosemite offer excellent alternatives. Many couples choose to stay in nearby towns because they often provide more lodging choices, larger vacation rentals, additional restaurants, grocery stores, and easier access to everyday conveniences.

- El Portal
- Mariposa
- Groveland
- Lee Vining (ideal for weddings in Tuolumne Meadows or along Tioga Road)
Although you’ll spend a little more time driving to your ceremony location, many couples find these communities offer exceptional value and a wider variety of accommodations.
Hotels, Lodges, or Vacation Rentals?
There’s no single right answer—it simply depends on your wedding plans. Hotels and lodges are ideal for couples looking for convenience, on-site amenities, and a traditional vacation experience. Vacation rentals are often perfect for larger families, wedding parties, or couples planning to spend several days exploring Yosemite together. They typically offer additional space, private gathering areas, kitchens for preparing meals, and the opportunity to enjoy quality time together before and after your wedding.
Choosing Lodging Based on Your Ceremony Location
One of the most common questions couples ask me is where they should stay based on where they’re getting married. After officiating weddings throughout Yosemite for many years, here are my general recommendations.
Yosemite Valley Weddings
If your ceremony is taking place anywhere within Yosemite Valley—including Cathedral Beach, Sentinel Beach, Swinging Bridge, Cook’s Meadow, El Capitan Meadow, Tunnel View, or Valley View—I highly recommend staying inside Yosemite Valley whenever possible. Being only minutes from your ceremony location creates a relaxed, enjoyable wedding day and allows you to maximize your time exploring the valley.
Glacier Point, Taft Point, Washburn Point, or Sentinel Dome
For weddings along Glacier Point Road, staying in Yosemite West, Yosemite Valley or Wawona provides the most convenient access. These locations are especially beautiful at sunrise and sunset, so minimizing your drive time can make a significant difference on your wedding day.
Tuolumne Meadows and Tioga Road
If you’re getting married in Tuolumne Meadows or at one of the spectacular overlooks along Tioga Road, consider staying in Lee Vining or, when available, Tuolumne Meadows Lodge. Because these locations are at much higher elevations, staying nearby can make for a much more relaxed morning.
Wawona or Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoia Weddings
For ceremonies in Wawona or at the Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias, staying at the historic Wawona Hotel or nearby lodging in Fish Camp or Oakhurst provides easy access while allowing you to enjoy one of Yosemite’s quieter and more peaceful areas. If you stay outside of the park, remember to allow a little extra commute time for getting through the entrance gate.
When Should We Reserve Our Lodging?
As soon as you’ve selected your wedding date. I can’t emphasize this enough. The most desirable accommodations often book many months in advance, particularly during spring, summer, weekends, and holidays. Waiting too long may significantly limit your options. Whenever possible, reserve your lodging immediately after confirming your ceremony date and obtaining your permit.

- Consider driving times rather than just mileage. Roads within Yosemite are scenic but often slower than expected.
- If you’re planning a sunrise ceremony, staying closer to your ceremony location can make an early morning much more enjoyable.
- If family members or guests are traveling together, consider reserving accommodations in the same area to simplify transportation and coordination.
- During winter, always check current road conditions and possible chain requirements before traveling.
My Personal Recommendation
If your budget allows, I almost always recommend staying inside Yosemite National Park. There’s something magical about watching the sunrise over granite cliffs with a cup of coffee in hand, hearing the Merced River flowing nearby, and knowing your ceremony is only minutes away. That extra time spent enjoying Yosemite—rather than sitting in traffic or searching for parking—often becomes one of the most memorable parts of the entire wedding experience.
If staying inside the park isn’t possible, don’t worry. The surrounding gateway communities offer wonderful alternatives and still provide easy access to Yosemite’s incredible scenery. No matter where you choose to stay, my hope is that your wedding becomes more than just a single day.
