How to Get Married in Yosemite: Planning Your Yosemite Wedding Adventure
Your wedding day deserves a setting as unforgettable as the love you share, and there are few places in the world more breathtaking than Yosemite National Park. Whether you’re planning an intimate elopement or a celebration surrounded by family and friends, getting married in Yosemite is an unforgettable experience. As someone who has had the privilege of officiating weddings throughout Yosemite National Park, I’ve created this guide to help make your planning process simple, enjoyable, and stress-free.
While planning a National Park wedding may seem overwhelming at first, the process is actually quite straightforward when you know what to expect. Planning your Yosemite wedding is easier when you take it one step at a time. The following 13 steps will help guide you through the process.
Set Your Budget
Begin by determining how much you’re comfortable spending and whether family or friends will be contributing. Establishing a realistic budget early will help guide every decision that follows, from your guest list and ceremony location to your vendors and accommodations.
Create Your Guest List (If Applicable)
If you’re inviting guests, prepare a preliminary guest list before choosing your ceremony location. Yosemite’s approved wedding sites have group size limitations, so knowing approximately how many people will attend will help you select the best location while keeping your budget on track.
Choose Your Wedding Date
Select a date that is meaningful to you, such as an anniversary or another special milestone. It’s also wise to have one or two alternate dates in mind in case your preferred date isn’t available. As you choose your date, consider seasonal weather, road accessibility, guest availability, and the fact that some Yosemite ceremony locations are only accessible during certain times of the year.
Choose Your Ceremony Location
Yosemite National Park offers dozens of spectacular locations for wedding ceremonies, from towering granite cliffs and peaceful meadows to waterfalls and alpine lakes. The National Park Service has some restrictions and requires weddings of certain sizes to take place at designated ceremony sites, each with its own guest capacity and restrictions designed to help protect the park.

Obtain a Yosemite Special Use Permit
A Special Use Permit is required for all weddings and commitment ceremonies held within Yosemite National Park. The application process is straightforward, but it’s important to apply early, as permits are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

Send Your Invitations
Once your permit has been approved and your ceremony date is confirmed, send your invitations as early as possible. For destination weddings like Yosemite, mailing invitations 6 to 14 months in advance gives guests plenty of time to arrange travel and accommodations.
Reserve Your Lodging Early
Lodging inside Yosemite National Park often books months in advance, particularly during spring, summer, holidays, and weekends. Whether you choose to stay inside the park or in one of the nearby gateway communities, reserving accommodations early will provide the greatest selection and peace of mind.

Book Your Wedding Vendors
Many of Yosemite’s most sought-after wedding professionals book well in advance. If possible, reserve your vendors 6 to 14 months before your wedding date. Depending on your vision, you may wish to hire a photographer, florist, baker, musician, hair and makeup artist, planner, officiant, or videographer.

Choose Your Attire and Decorations
One of the best parts about getting married in Yosemite is that your wedding can be as elegant or as adventurous as you choose. Whether you’re wearing a formal gown and tuxedo or hiking boots beneath your wedding attire, choose clothing that’s appropriate for your ceremony location, the season, and your comfort level.
Finalize Your Ceremony and Timeline
As your wedding day approaches, finalize your ceremony details and create a timeline for your vendors and guests, and include any planned activities. A well-organized timeline helps ensure everyone knows where they need to be and when.
Obtain Your California Marriage License
A California marriage license may be obtained from any County Clerk’s office within California and is valid for 90 days. Following your ceremony, the completed license must be returned to the issuing County Clerk within 10 days.
